Neon Jewelry: The Brighter, The Better!

We know we’re dating ourselves, but back in the late 80s/early 90s, we had big, fat crushes on the boys from New Kids On The Block. Lucky for us, they are currently on tour with Boyz II Men and 98 Degrees (boy band nostalgia overload!), and one of us got the chance to see them in concert this weekend in all of their studly glory (Lydia’s a lucky gal, what can we say.) Although the music was a delightful pre-teen throwback, what Lydia noticed most about the crowd was all of the wonderfully vibrant neon-colored clothing and accessories. Although neon clothing can be a bit bold for some…

This may be taking neon a bit far. But then again, it's Katy Perry.

…we feel that neon jewelry is something with which anyone can get on board, even if it’s just once in a great while. Whether you wear your neon pieces with a simple white t-shirt and cute jeans, or you decide to really jazz up a little black dress with a fabulous neon necklace, we can’t think of a better way to embrace our motto, “bead boldly!” Here are a few design ideas to get you glowing:

Flower Power

Although we haven’t had too many April showers yet here in the San Francisco Bay Area, we are lucky enough to already have flowers blooming all around us, and holy camellias, are they gorgeous! From the bougainvillea that’s in full bloom across the street, to the gorgeous bouquets we have the pleasure of displaying in our shop, thanks to our resident artist Sandra Lawson of Carpe Diem Design, we just can’t get enough when it comes to flowers.

Below are a few photos of our selection of colorful flower and leaf beads & pendants we have here at Blue Door Beads, plus some other flower-inspired design ideas we thought you might enjoy. We will leave you with a story a friend told us today about her daughter:

“After collecting flowers in the field near our house, Ella said, ‘Mommy, I love that people are like flowers.’ I asked her what she meant and she said, ‘People come in all colors, just like flowers, and they’re all beautiful.'”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! 🙂

Going Green for March

If someone asked us which color we associate with March, we would have to say green. Besides the obvious reason (Saint Patrick’s Day — just in case it wasn’t that obvious), green also comes to our minds because of all the little green buds that have started to sprout around the Blue Door Beads neighborhood. Granted, we are lucky to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where spring pretty much started last week, but, for those of you in other parts of the country and the northern hemisphere, spring is coming! March 20th officially marks the spring equinox for everyone, and we are counting down the days!

What else has put us in a green mood? It just so happens that the Pantone Fashion Color Report declared Emerald the Color of the Year for 2013.

We here at Blue Door Beads not only enjoy green beads, but we also wholeheartedly support the idea of “going green,” and we feature several different types of upcycled beads and components. Check ’em out!

Vintage bottle cap beads are funky & playful! They also come in tons of other colors.

Student Projects from Our Metal Stamping Class

Although these photos are also in our Make & Create gallery, we were so impressed with what our students created in our Metal Stamping class this past Saturday, we felt they deserved their very own blog post! Can you believe they made all of these pieces in just 2 hours?! Such talent!

We like this students' variety of pieces: pendants that say "endure, "fly" and "create", plus two journal covers for a "create" booklet pendant. Textured circle charms and square squirrel charms complete the collection!
